June 2013

Simon Wilcox

Well, he did it!

979 miles in 91 hours of pedalling at nearly 11 mph.

Simon Wilcox, a founder member of Dynamo, erstwhile committee member and long-time helper has shaken off the sporting lethargy of his youth to undertake this arduous journey starting tomorrow, Saturday.

Nine days of pedalling, 8th – 16th June.

Please support his charities if you can (details below).

You will be able to follow his progress live at

Look out for essuu  (that is ess for [S]imon, uu for [w]ilcox , geddit?).

He says:-

On Saturday I begin Ride Across Britain, 960 miles in 9 days on a bicycle. There are 700 riders and almost 200 support crew. We’re camping every night. You can find out more on the website at http://www.rideacrossbritain.com/

It’s primarily a personal challenge, something I’ve always wanted to do and as I’m not getting any younger, best I get it done whilst I’m still fit enough to take it on. But lots of people have asked me how they can sponsor the trip so I’ve created  a Facebook event page to pass on those details.

In memory of Sally – we met Sally and her family on our honeymoon and we’ve been good friends ever since. Sadly Sally died 2 years ago of cancer and I’d like to support the amazing team that looked after her.
Professor Justin Stebbing and his team at Imperial College, Hammersmith Hospital are working on developing new drugs to help overcome resistance to anti-cancer treatments. The charity Action Against Cancer directly supports this work, working with few overheads so that more of the money goes directly to fund the team. Read more at http://aacancer.org/

In memory of Rob – I only got to know Rob in the last couple of years and sadly he was taken from us by a heart attack in November. 18 months or so prior to that he suffered a stroke and the team at Headway were so important to him during his recovery. You can read more about their work at http://www.headway.org.uk/

Both Sally & Rob faced their challenges with bravery, fortitude and a laugh never far away. If I can carry just a piece of that strength with me, this ride will be no trouble at all.
